What Does It Mean To ‘Wait On God’?

Most people do not like to wait. However, while going through the motions of everyday life, waiting is something that cannot always be avoided. We do it at the grocery store, the gas station, and even on the fast-food lines. Why is it even called fast food, right?

The reality is that oftentimes, we have to wait a while before we can partake of a desired result.

It’s the same with God. The difference though is that when you wait on him, the result of your wait will be far more worthwhile than what you actually set out to obtain.

The Bible tells us about the many benefits of waiting on him.

“Those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.” – Psalm 37:9

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

“The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.” – Lamentations 3:25

Waiting on God takes effort. It’s a test of faith. It’s especially hard when things are not going quite right or when you’ve been praying for some kind of breakthrough that has not happened as yet.

What does it mean to ‘Wait on God’?

Waiting on God is different from the everyday kind of wait. It’s a spiritual wait that is set into motion by our trust in him and is activated by faith.

As is human nature, we sometimes grow impatient. We get discouraged and might even question if God really hears our prayers. Remember, God is sovereign. That means that he can exercise his right over all creation. He works in his own timing.

Encouraging scriptures while you wait on God

The Bible provides encouragement through God’s words, the Bible. These scriptures feed the soul and help us to keep the faith while we wait. We are encouraged to wait patiently, quietly and expectantly on him.

Psalm 37:7

“Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way…” (ESV)

Psalm 62:5

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.” (ESV)

Psalm 130:5

“I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.” (KJV)

What should you do while you are waiting on God?

While you are waiting on God, a good thing to do is to start praising! Praise him in prayer.

“Thank you, Lord! Thank you for everything that you have done for me and what you are about to do for me! Thank you for going ahead of my situation and clearing a path for me. I thank you that the outcome of my circumstance will be far better than I could imagine and so much more than I probably even deserve. I’m going to wait and trust in your timing. Amen.”
