While you plan for your next travel experience, here are a few travel safety tips you may want to keep in mind.
Research your intended destination before you travel.
The first rule of safe travel is to know about the place where you intend on traveling to. Make it a point to learn about the country including the people, the culture, and even the cuisine. It is also a good idea to research the safest spots for tourists and what areas should be avoided. Getting a travel guide or booking guided tours are also a safe alternative.
Blend in with your surroundings.
Once you have completed your research, you can embark on your destination of choice. Act as if you are a local. Acting like a tourist could make you a target for con artists and other characters whose attention you may attract. Trying to blend in will draw less attention to you.
Properly manage your money.
Make sure that you notify your bank in advance if you plan to use credit or debit cards. You don’t want to be traveling and find that your bank blocks your account for what they deem to be suspicious activity. Always keep a small amount of cash on you in the event that your card happens to get blocked, or if you cannot locate an ATM at your leisure.
Learn how to communicate.
It’s probably a good idea to learn basic phrases in the local language. This is mainly of course if you plan on visiting places where your native language is not spoken. In case of emergency, you may also want to know how to ask for things such as, the police station, the hospital or even the bank.
Avoid flashing your wealth.
Don’t carry too much cash on you at any given time. Also avoid wearing too much jewelry or too much fancy designer clothing and accessories. Showcasing your wealth may make you more appealing to scammers and people without good intentions.
Compile a list of emergency contact numbers.
This includes having contact numbers for the local police, hospital, and the fire department. If your country has an embassy in the place where you plan to visit, it’s probably a good idea to have that number as well.
Secure important personal items.
It’s probably not a good idea to travel with all of your personal belongings on you every time you leave the hotel. Consider securing your passport and other valuables in the hotel safe. If you must take important items out with you, always keep a good crossbody bag with you so that you can hold personal items close to you. This could also help to minimize the risk of you losing your shoulder bag or wallet unintentionally.
