6 Reasons Why Marriages Fail
There are many reasons why a marriage can fail. Six of the most common reasons are discussed below.
Infidelity
A cheating spouse can undoubtably lead to the demise of a marriage. This unfaithful or unholy act creates hurt and pain that a person can sometimes never get over. When infidelity occurs, it can affect more than just the couple, but also others around them. Infidelity is one of the leading reasons why a marriage can fail.
Poor Communication
Communication is essential in a marriage. The lack thereof can have serious effects on a marriage. Communication is important because it not only helps to solve marital problems, but it can prevent them from occurring. Partners must be willing to openly discuss their feelings with each other. Each person should respect the others’ feelings and then be able to agree on the way forward. Failure to effectively communicate can lead to a breakdown in the marriage.
Abuse
No form of abuse is acceptable in a marriage. Verbal and physical abuse among others, are the makings for a failed marriage. A marriage where abuse is present is unhealthy. If one spouse is being abused by the other, it is best to seek help and support from family or friends. If necessary, law enforcement should be solicitated for help. Marital abuse does not convey love. It is the total opposite. Marital abuse by a spouse could ultimately lead to the demise of a marriage.
Family Interference
The lack of family support is another aspect that can cause the failure of a marriage. Sometimes, the in-laws or even the stepchildren may not be very receptive of a spouse. If this happens, it oftentimes causes a strain on the marriage and makes room for unwanted arguments between spouses. A spouse must be willing to stand their ground and let family members know that their actions are undesirable and will not be tolerated. A spouse’s failure to stick up for their significant other against all odds could potentially lead to the failure of the marriage.
Financial Burdens
For starters, finances are a conversation that should take place even before the matrimonial vows are said. It is at that time that partners should make disclosures about debts as well as spending habits. If one spouse is blindsided and finds out about financial woes during the marriage, this is potentially a recipe for disaster.
On the other hand, sometimes, debt can be incurred during the course of the marriage. There may also be a circumstance where one spouse may lose their job. If the partners cannot find a swift solution to their financial problems, it will eventually begin to put a strain on the marriage. When this happens, the relationship will begin to suffer and could lead to marital failure.
Addictions
Addictions can cause the decline of a marriage due to the stress that comes along with it. Substance abuse, gambling, and even sexual addictions among others, can create a tense environment for both partners. Addictions do not make married life easy. They tend to cause arguments to arise and can even result in physical altercations in extreme cases. Addictions can cause immense stress, especially for the competing partner. Further, if the affected partner is not willing to get help for their addiction, the failure of the marriage is almost inevitable.
Other reasons why marriages fail include the following:
- Lack of conflict resolution
- Unrealistic expectations about the marriage/spouse
- Differing goals
- Lack of respect
- Marrying too young
- Religious differences
Takeaway
A failed marriage is not an ideal situation. It is no one’s desire to have this happen to them. While issues may arise in a marriage, a couple’s failure to effectively address them can have catastrophic consequences. If necessary, it may be best to seek counselling if the issues seem to be more than can be handled. Failure to address issues timely may ultimately result in separation or divorce.
