Thinking – By Walter D. Wintle – The Power of Positive Thinking

Poet Walter D. Wintle in his poem, ‘Thinking’ reminds us of how our state of mind can impact our lives. Simply put, having a negative outlook will most likely lead to defeat, while maintaining a positive attitude will lead to achievement or success.

The poet makes an encouraging statement in the last stanza. He notes that the battles in life are not always won by the stronger or faster person, battles can also be won by a person who chooses not to give up.

‘Thinking’ by Walter D. Wintle

If you think you are beaten, you are;

If you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you’d like to win, but you think you can’t,

It is almost a cinch you won’t.

If you think you’ll lose, you’ve lost;

For out in this world we find;

Success begins with a fellow’s will

It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are;

You’ve got to think high to rise.

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before

You can ever win the prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster man;

But sooner or later the man who wins

Is the man who thinks he can!

This poem dates back to the late 19th or early 20th century. The message however remains relevant today. Also known as “The Man Who Thinks He Can”, it encourages us to keep a positive mindset.

Being in good state of mind is important. What’s also important, is believing in yourself. If you have a belief in yourself, your basically halfway there. A belief in yourself will help motivate you to keep on going. Doubting however or thinking failed thoughts will hinder you from moving forward.

If truth be told, it’s not always easy to think positive especially when things keep going wrong. Some people may start off with a positive outlook, but somewhere down the line something changes and discourages them.

It’s not over yet though. Maintaining a positive attitude can help you to persevere and give you the drive that you need to keep on going.

Moreover, having a positive attitude is also beneficial in many ways.

The benefits of a positive attitude include:

– Improvement of mental and physical health

– Developing self-confidence

– Less stress

– Increased satisfaction

– Living an overall happier life

The poem is an excellent reminder of how a positive state of mind can help us to think better of ourselves, overcome obstacles, and be success in life.  If you believe that you can accomplish something, guess what, you can! Have the mindset to keep on going.

All the best to you.
